I know this isn’t about coffee—though I did make a pecan-flavored iced espresso on my way to the event!
The O’Gorman family lives in my county, and Patty O’Gorman was, arguably, one of the first friends I made in Texas when I moved here. I didn’t have a job, so she hired me to work at her shop, Loretta’s Loot on the Route, which was lovingly named after her grandmother. Patty, her husband Mike, and their daughter, Abby, quickly pulled me into their life. They were like family—inviting and giving me a place to go and something to care for when I was uncertain about my career and life path.
In the spring of 2019, Patty and Mike’s son, Dalton, was tragically killed while handling heavy equipment at the college he was attending. I met Patty in the fall of 2020. When she shared the story of her son’s death, I was shocked. For a woman still mourning the loss of a child, she and her husband were full of hope and life. There is a strength in the O’Gorman family that goes beyond natural capabilities—a strong spirit, and, if you’re Christian, I’d say a God-founded faith and understanding that transcends our world.
In the past, I wasn’t able to attend the memorial roping, as I was usually working at Patty’s shop during those weekends so she could oversee the event. This year, I finally got to attend and decided to take pictures. Sometimes, when I’m unsure how comfortable I’ll be in a new setting, I bring a camera and walk around taking photos. People tend to leave you alone, smile, and be friendlier when you look official with a camera. I did ask Patty and Mike if it was okay to take pictures, and they were fine with it. Their nephew-in-law was also there taking pictures with a much better camera, so I’m excited to see what he captured.
The Dalton O’Gorman Memorial Roping raises money for a scholarship fund in Dalton’s name. They have multiple recipients, and, last I checked, they’ve raised $85,000 for these students. This event was not only a fun gathering and a wonderful cause but also a meaningful way for the O’Gorman family to honor their son’s legacy. I never met Dalton, but I’ve heard stories of his humor, smile, heart for people, and amazing talent as a roper. Every year, many local businesses and community members contribute to this cause. It was wonderful to finally attend and see how Dalton’s spirit lives on.

Am sorry to hear about Dalton. What a sad story. I like the name of Patty's shop. Very clever. I had no idea that pecans were used to flavor coffee.
Thanks for the photos.
